The U.S. Economy Is Now Powered by Data Centers — Literally
Harvard economist Jason Furman just dropped a staggering stat: 92% of U.S. GDP growth in the first half of 2025 came from AI-related data-center spending. Without it? GDP growth would’ve been just 0.1%. That means 4% of the economy (tech infrastructure) carried the other 96%. AI giants — Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Meta, and Nvidia — are now spending ~$400 billion per year on new data-center capacity. That alone adds 1 percentage point to U.S. GDP.More than consumer spending.
