Texas Just Changed the Rules—Is Your Data Center Ready to Power Through It

ERCOT can now disconnect data centers during crises. Equipment shortages make it even harder to stay online.

Texas just flipped the switch on data center reliability—and if your project depends on uninterrupted grid power, it’s time to rethink your playbook.

On June 25, Governor Greg Abbott signed Senate Bill 6 (S.B. 6), giving ERCOT—the state’s grid operator—the authority to cut large, non-critical loads like data centers during firm load shed events. In plain terms: if the power grid is stressed, your site could go dark.

At the same time, a critical shortage of gas turbines, generators, and other power equipment is slowing down energy project timelines across the country.

If you don't have a procurement partner who can help you stay ahead of the supply curve, you’re gambling with your uptime—and your future.

What the Law Means for Data Centers

Under S.B. 6, any site drawing 75 MW or more from ERCOT must be prepared to disconnect during grid emergencies. If you're not already running on your own power during those events, you need to be. Fast.

The law also:

  • Requires mandatory shutoff equipment at qualifying facilities.

  • Establishes a voluntary curtailment program with 24-hour notice, but blocks participants from accessing other grid response programs.

  • Introduces new interconnection fees and stricter rules to reduce “phantom loads” in the state’s queue.

The message is clear: the days of assuming you’ll always have power are over.

Turbine Supply Is Tight—And Getting Worse

“The limited supply of turbines, which are a critical component of a natural gas plant, can add challenges and delays to these energy projects,” said Tom Morgan of Stanley Consultants.

That shortage is no longer theoretical. Project managers are:

  • Ordering turbines before environmental due diligence is even complete, just to get in line.

  • Competing for any size, any technology, as demand converges from across sectors.

  • Dealing with delays, red tape, and rising costs all at once.

“There’s definitely a race to get your orders in now,” Morgan adds.

Where Data Power Supply Comes In

At Data Power Supply, we’re not trying to design your energy system—we know you’ve already got engineers, architects, and infrastructure partners.

What you need is access. What you need is speed. What you need is leverage.

We specialize in sourcing, brokering, and delivering the critical power components your data center project depends on—before they’re gone.

Here’s what we deliver:

  • Natural gas turbines and backup generation systems—from the brands that matter, even when inventory is tight.

  • Battery energy storage systems (BESS) for sites needing flexible backup or grid-balancing options.

  • High-performance computing (HPC) hardware—sourced and ready for AI, ML, and hyperscale environments.

  • Demand-response capable equipment and curtailment-ready setups to keep you compliant with new regulations.

We don’t design your system. We make sure you can actually build it.

What This Means for Your Project Timeline

Whether you’re operating in Texas or planning elsewhere, the energy landscape is shifting:

  • Equipment is harder to get.

  • Interconnection is more competitive.

  • Uptime depends on flexibility—and that starts with your procurement.

If you're waiting on the grid, you’re vulnerable. If you're waiting on long-lead equipment, you're already behind.

Get Ahead or Get Left Behind

The future of data infrastructure belongs to operators who are prepared, powered, and proactive. Don’t let your buildout stall while someone else jumps the line.

Data Power Supply is your strategic sourcing partner—your access point to the energy systems and compute hardware that keep your facility online when it matters most.

Energy is your edge. Let us help you secure it.
